NLX Robotics

NLX Robotics is a Netherlands-based startup developing bipedal robots with human-like stability and control.

We design and build robotic systems where mechanics, sensing, and learning-based control are developed together as one integrated system.

Our work focuses on one of the core challenges of embodied AI: translating learned behavior from simulation into reliable, real-world motion.

Our current roadmap targets a modular bipedal platform as a proof of concept, forming the foundation for future humanoid systems.

About

At NLX Robotics, we design and build robots from first principles. Our focus is on understanding and engineering the interaction between mechanical structure, sensing, and control—because robust locomotion does not emerge from software or hardware alone, but from their tight integration.

Recent advances in simulation, computing, and learning algorithms have made it possible for small, focused teams to tackle problems that were previously out of reach. We use this momentum deliberately: learning from the state of the art, iterating quickly, and revising designs when better solutions emerge.

To accelerate development, we leverage off-the-shelf low-level components where appropriate. At the same time, the system architecture, mechanical design, and learning-based control strategies are developed in-house. This allows us to explore new approaches to sensorimotor coordination and build robots that are both adaptable and physically robust.

Founder & Technical Lead

Johan van Doornik

Johan van Doornik is the founder and technical lead of NLX Robotics. He holds a Master’s in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, where his research focused on the control of human locomotion. He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University, studying the role of learning in motor control.

He has supported multiple companies with advanced engineering projects involving 3D modeling, machine learning, and intelligent control systems. With a background spanning human biomechanics, robotics, signal processing, and control theory, he is now bringing these disciplines together to develop biologically inspired robotic systems at NLX Robotics.

NLX Robotics is a brand of Moving Innovations B.V., registered in the Netherlands under KvK 71112383.
